Clarington Forge is the forge in Wigan, England where our tools are made. Tools have been forged on this very site for 230 years. In England our tools are marketed under the name Bulldog, but we sell them as Clarington brand here in the U.S. As you might imagine with a forge that has been in existence for over 200 years, the forge has had different owners over the years. About five years ago the forge was purchased by the Rollins Group, a family business that was started in 1866. It is still a family owned and operated business today, and the company is proud to be breathing new life into Clarington Forge, and maintaining the tradition of quality English garden tools.

Who is Robert Larson Company? We are Clarington Forge, USA.  A family owned and operated business based in San Francisco, CA, we have been importing and distributing the finest European hand tools into the US since 1981. Our specialty has been woodworking tools, but we have been excited to expand into the world of garden tools over the past several years. Our relationship with the Rollins Group spans over 25 years, and multiple generations. We handle all the US distribution of Clarington garden tools. Clarington orders are shipped and serviced out of our warehouse in San Francisco.

Who is Emma Kelly? I am the daughter of Robert Larson, so I work for Clarington Forge, USA. However, I live and work just outside Philadelphia, PA.  I am not an expert gardener, but I love gardening, especially growing fruits and vegetables for my family. I will be using this blog to share with our customers some of the stories of our company, the factory, our tools, and the gardeners who use them.

Making Clarington tools available to gardeners in the U.S. is something we are really proud of. And it isn't just because they are good quality English tools. Clarington is the only company still producing solid forged garden tools in England. The history of Clarington Forge is impressive, but I am most excited to be bringing quality tools to a new generation of gardeners.

From all the staff at Clarington Forge: We are delighted to be working with Emma and Robert on this exciting new project. Robert recognised long ago that there is a demand in the United States for top quality tools, and we are able to produce them - tools that will last a lifetime.

Hi, I'm so happy someone else cares about great tools for the garden. I started my collection about 20 years ago and I guard them with my life! My all time fav it the smaller "rabbit" spade--a tool for many uses. I recently bought a Bulldog tool from the Robert Larson Co. and they high quality seems to be the same as ever. Thanks.

In the late 1980's I was able to purchase a spade and fork made by Bulldog - the longer D handled ones that are not easily found in the US. I am a six foot one fellow and need the longer handles. In 2003, while I was tending to my dying mother, the fork of that set was taken from the public garden where I work as the Gardenmaster (www.thelearninggarden.org - we have never had sufficient funding to have enough tools, so my private arsenal is often used on work days and there was a large workday while I was away). Almost with tears in my eyes, I see you are offering the longer D handled fork. As soon as I am able, I intend (finally) to replace my fork to go with that spade! The spade's patina is different now, having been oiled religiously with linseed oil every fall for over 22 years, but it will match in length and quality unlike what I might have had until now. I am very grateful for this opportunity.

Polly: Thank you for introducing yourself and the story of your tools. It is exciting to hear from gardeners, like yourself, who have been served well by the tools made at Clarington Forge.

David: It is wonderful how loved your garden tools are after so many years. I’m pleased to hear you were finally able to find the fork you were looking for here. Thank you for sharing the history of your tools and garden.
